Summer Training: Part One

Now, I know in my last running post, Running to Live , I said I would likely start my summer training with a 4+ mile run. And, to the letter, that's what I did.     However, it must also be stated it turned out to be a 7.5 mile run. Honestly, and though I felt fine the whole time, it might've been a bit much. Maybe mile too far, as I ran the entire distance through, stopping twice only to remove pebbles that had been stuck in the treads of my ON running shoes.     But, a start is a start, and I was the first of my siblings out of the blocks this season. This morning, I took them to a bike trail in town where the five of us started, or in my case continued , our 2023 XC season.     I  continued with my conditioning today, opening with a 3 mile run followed by an easy cooldown mile. A total of four miles.      We crossed paths with one of our teammates on the trail, and might I just say, I was a bit jealous of his work...

Avocados

This poem is a request from an inspirational friend of mine, to whom I owe much thanks.  A vo ca do s Why the small Avocado? Well, just simply because They're delicious isn't enough. It's cause she said. So, these brown green under green yummies are The pride and glory of my bacon sand wich The brown sphere is central to this fruit This fruit that so splendidly makes a dish Called (and lovingly so) guacamole, a pasty Delic ious condiment mixed with tomato and onion Or you take a ripe and squishy avoc ado, skin and gut it And slice up the master topper for your fa vorite crac kers This one, so sm al l, who lays beside his brot her in scaly skin Who says to the wo r l d at large, "I am divine in flavor, now begin All ye hungry mortals, to see k within, and f i nd y our taste buds' friend And though hired to say, in truth I say to you all this, And not just, But also, now what better reason is there for so great a natural Food? And why wouldn't a ...

Living Boldly: Poetic Proof

Living to Improve is about building the life of your dreams. I won't promise you'll ever achieve it, at least not in all aspects, but you can take steps to get closer.     For me, that's writing. Whether on this blog, or short stories, start novels I'll never finish, writing another poetry collection... well, suffice to say, there are many writing mediums, and I enjoy many.     In this post, I want to show my readers I'm doing my part when it comes to Living to Improve. To prove it to you, here are a few of my newest poems: The Glory in the Ruins Growing, stretching, enveloping Covering in deepest night Blanketing under leaves of darkness Stone crumbles as wood rots Pillars collapse and stairs decompose The foundation cracks and the ceiling shatters Thieves pillage and vandals work Spiders spin and birds nest Dust lays thick and the sun bleaches Walls shorten and warp Decor fades and lies broken Floors weaken and corrode And the beauty inte...

Running to Live

Part of Living to Imporve is staying healthy. My favorite way to do that is to run. I'm on the local high school's cross country (XC) team, and for three years I've run with an amazing group of talented kids.       The reason I say that running is a part of living boldly is that to unbury your dreams, or if you're like me and don't need to unbury them, chase your dreams, you 100% need to be alive.       Like it or not, it has been scientifically proven that exercise helps your health. The nice thing about running is that it can be mindless. How hard is it to put one foot in front of the other? If you can run, you can Run. That's not to say it'll be easy, of fun at the start, but after you do it for a while, a nice, slow, long run can wake you up, or just give you a chance to get out, and be alone. Or with your significant other. Or your music, podcast or audiobook. Kill two birds with one stone.      Or, if you'r...
